Carlos Slim the Mexican business tycoon, philanthropist, billionaire, and investor. His was full name was Carlos Slim Helu who was born on 28 January, 1940 in city Mexico. His father’s name was Julian slim Haddad and his mother’s name was Linda Helu Atta. His father was a successful dry goods business owner at that time.

Childhood of Carlos Slim

Carlos and his sibling were taught business from an early age by his father Julian Slim Haddad and at the age of 12, Slim bought shares in a Mexican bank.

Although his father died in 1953 when Slim was only 14 years old. Later on Slim continued to work in his business until he was 17 years old. He attended the national autonomous university of Mexico to study civil engineering. He also taught algebra and linear programming while at school and went in business immediately after his graduation.

Carlos business career

After that he started working from the strong business foundation built by his father also Slim began his career, as a trader, in Mexico and soon went on to start in the different businesses. And moved his father’s business toward the real state business.

And by 1965, his capital grown big enough, that he was incorporating other companies or buying them outright. By 1966, he was already worth an estimated 40 million dollars and growing. After that he started to invest in many others and different fields like mining, real state, and also in the field of construction.

Rising of Grupo Galas

During 1970, he continued growing his empire by establishing and purchasing companies in various industries. By 1980, he had unified his various interests into the parent company “Grupo Galas”, which bought all his holding together.

In 1982, the falling prices of oil caused the mostly oil-based economy of Mexico to suffer and collapse, as banks became nationalized and the value of the Mexican currency Peso plummeted.

During the next few years of economic downturn, Slim increased his acquisition efforts and gained large shares in the Mexican branches of international companies, including a 50% share in “The Hershey Company”.

In 1990, his conglomerate “Grupo Carso” became a public company worldwide. This is also the year that he began extending his influence into telephone communication, working with “France Telecom” and the “Southwestern Bell corporation”, to buy the phone company “Telmex” from the Mexican government.

And this was a start of what would end in an almost complete takeover of the nation’s landline and eventually mobile phone service. After decades of purchasing the Mexican international companies, after Carlos’s interest began to reach beyond Latin America.

He developed a united states branch of his phone company “Telmex” and also purchased a stake in “Tracfone”, united states based mobile company.

During 2000, he continued to build his empire in the united states and Latin America buying and selling companies & increasing his stakes in his long-standing mobile and tobacco interests.

Slim also invested in many diverse companies during this time including “The new York times company” ‘Saks fifth avenue’ and the airline “Volaris”. On April 23, 2014 Slim gained control of his first successful European acquisition, “Telecom Austria”. The company has already established mobile services in seven European countries and Slim views it as an excellent opportunity, to expand into the central and eastern European markets.

As of 15th January 2015 he became the largest individual shareholder in “The New York Times Company” with a holding of 16.8% shares. Carlos cashed in on loans given to the company, when it was floundering at the beginning of the united state’s recession, to acquire these shares.

An inquisitive businessman, Slim has an amassed a wide range of industries under his company “Grupo Carso”.

Forbes magazine has named this billionaire, the richest man in the world, four times. And as per Forbes 2019, the current net worth of Carlos Slim is nearby 64,000,000,000 US dollars.

Personal Life

He also underwent heart surgery and began to back away from the daily working of his business, passing the reins to his children and family members. There is an older brother of Carlos who was died at the age of 74 on 11 February. He was also a businessman.

Wife and family

He married Soumaya Domit in 1967 and the couple had six children together. His children’s name is Carlos Slim Domit, Johanna Slim Domit, Patrick Slim Domit, Marco Antonio Slim, Vanessa Slim Domit, Soumaya Slim Domit.

Awards

Carlos Slim is awarded by many awards. He is The national order of Cedar by the Lebanese government and also known as the commander of the Belgian Order of Leopold 2. His company Telmex received a national sports prize for Mexico’s sports promotion. Slim also awarded as an honorary doctorate from George Washington University.
